Shawwal Full Moon Reaches Peak Illumination over Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom’s skies were graced last night by the full moon of Shawwal, locally referred to as the “butterfly moon,” a seasonal name inspired by the surge of butterflies that follows the spring rains.

Head of the Jeddah Astronomy Society Majed Abu Zahra explained that the full moon occurs when it stands in direct opposition to the sun from Earth’s perspective, leaving its near side fully illuminated.

This moment of fullness is reached when the angle between the sun, Earth, and the moon measures 180 degrees, allowing the moon to appear complete to the naked eye throughout the night.
